Objective

Tripoley combines three classic card games in one round: Hearts, Poker, and Michigan Rummy. Your goal isn’t just to win hands — it’s to capture as many of the nine different money pots on the board as possible. Each deal lets you score in multiple ways: win Hearts sequences, take the Poker pot with your 5-card hand, collect pay-card bonuses during Michigan, and be the first to empty your hand to claim the Kitty. Tripoley rewards versatility: players must adapt across trick-taking, hand evaluation, and rummy-style shedding to maximize winnings.

Material

Standard 52-card deck + Tripoley board

Board has 9 sections:

  • 8-9-10 (Hearts sequence)
  • K-Q (Hearts pair)
  • Poker hand
  • Kitty (center)
  • A♠, K♥, Q♦, J♣ (pay cards)

Setup

All players ante to all 9 sections. Deal: 8–10 cards per player (depends on player count)

Three Phases

Phase 1 – Hearts

Play cards upward in numerical sequence:

  • Start from the lowest available card
  • Must play if you have the next card in sequence
  • Keep taking tricks as long as you can continue the run

Hearts pots won during this phase:

  • 8-9-10 sequence pot
  • K-Q Hearts pair pot (if you hold and play both)

Phase 2 – Poker

Use your hand to make your best 5-card poker hand.

  • All players show at the same time
  • Strongest poker hand wins the Poker pot

Poker ranking (standard): Royal Flush > Straight Flush > Four of a Kind > Full House > Flush > Straight > etc.

Phase 3 – Michigan (Rummy Phase)

Classic Michigan Rummy play:

  • Lay down legal melds: sets, runs, sequences
  • Play pay cards (A♠, K♥, Q♦, J♣) to instantly win those pots
  • Continue shedding cards in turn

First player to empty hand wins the Kitty pot

Scoring

Each deal has multiple pots up for grabs:

  • Hearts sequence pot (1)
  • Hearts K-Q pot (1)
  • Poker pot (1)
  • Pay-card pots (4)
  • Kitty (1)

Total = 8–9 pots per deal

Unclaimed pots roll over to the next deal, making some rounds extremely valuable.

Strategy

Multi-game balancing

  • Remember: you’re playing 3 games at once
  • A weak Hearts hand may still be a strong Poker hand
  • Save good cards for Michigan if Hearts is unwinnable

Target big pots

  • Rollover pots can be huge — prioritize them
  • Don’t waste effort chasing tiny pots if there’s a giant Kitty or Poker pot building

Pay-card discipline

  • Holding A♠, K♥, Q♦, J♣ is sometimes better than melding early
  • Each pay card is its own independent money pot

Poker hand vs. Michigan play

  • Don’t break a winning poker hand just to shed cards early
  • But if Kitty is enormous, going out first might be more profitable than winning Poker

Ending the Game

Each deal is self-contained. Play as many rounds as desired; most groups stop when the table agrees or when everyone is out of chips.
