Special Rules
Buying:
- When it is not your turn, you may still “buy” the top discard if you really want it.
- To buy a card, you must also draw an extra card from the stock as the price you pay for cutting in.
- You may buy at most 3 times per round, so choose your moments carefully.
- The active player always gets first rights on the discard before anyone else can jump in.
Jokers:
- Jokers act as wild cards and slide perfectly into any set or run.
- If you later draw the natural card that a joker is standing in for, you may swap it in and pull the joker back to your hand, often opening a clever new play or tightening your spread just enough to go out.
Scoring
Points against you (the stuff you want to avoid):
- Joker: 50 points
- Ace: 15 points
- Face cards: 10 points
- Number cards: Face value
At the end of 7 rounds, the player with the lowest total score wins.
Strategy
Use buying wisely:
- Buy the discard only when it clearly helps you complete or extend a set or run.
- Avoid burning your 3 buys in the early turns just for small improvements.
- Save your buys for moments when a single card unlocks your whole contract.
Joker management:
- Reserve jokers for awkward gaps or hard to find ranks.
- Replace jokers in other players melds whenever possible to steal them back.
- Keep at least one joker in mind for the tougher late contracts in rounds 6 and 7.
Round 7 focus:
- This is the toughest contract: three runs of 4 and no discard when you go out.
- Plan your entire hand so you can lay everything at once.
- Count carefully, avoid loose high cards, and make sure you are truly ready before you commit to going out.
Frequently asked questions
What is Liverpool Rummy?
Liverpool Rummy is a contract-based rummy game played over seven rounds, each with its own required combination of sets and runs. Players must complete the contract for the current round before laying down anything, which creates a steady sense of progression and rising difficulty. After melding, players can extend their own layouts or lay off on others.
What are the seven contracts in Liverpool Rummy?
Liverpool Rummy uses a fixed sequence of contracts that grows harder each round. Players must make: Round 1 two sets, Round 2 one set and one run, Round 3 two runs, Round 4 three sets, Round 5 two sets and one run, Round 6 one set and two runs, Round 7 three runs. Each contract must be met before playing extra cards.
How many cards do you get in Liverpool Rummy?
Players receive ten cards in the first four rounds and twelve in the final three. The larger hand size is intentional, giving players enough material to build longer runs and more complex combinations while still managing risk. These extra cards also raise the tension, since unplayed cards become penalty points at the end of the round.
What is the buying rule in Liverpool Rummy?
Players may “buy” the top discard out of turn by calling for it before the next player draws. Buying gives you that card plus one additional card from the stock as a penalty. Because buys are usually limited to three per round, players must judge whether the discard is worth the extra cost and the strategic advantage it provides.
How do you score in Liverpool Rummy?
Penalty scoring is straightforward: any cards left in your hand after someone goes out are counted against you. Number cards score face value, face cards score ten, and Aces score fifteen. After all seven rounds are completed, players total their penalty points. The player with the lowest overall score across the full sequence wins the game.
Is Liverpool Rummy the same as Contract Rummy?
Liverpool Rummy and Contract Rummy follow the same structure but differ slightly in details such as contract order and buying rules. Both use progressive rounds with increasingly demanding meld requirements, and both reward efficient hand management. Many players treat them as close siblings, and the names are often used interchangeably depending on local rules.
