Objective
Your goal is simple to explain but surprisingly tense in practice: avoid being the player with the lowest hand value after someone knocks. You try to build a tight little trio of cards in the same suit that adds up as close to 31 points as possible. Hit that perfect 31 and you feel like a magician. Miss it by a mile, and you start sweating those precious lives. Everyone begins with three lives, and once you lose them all, you're out. Last survivor at the table takes the win.
Material
Use a standard 52-card deck. Cards rank K → Q → J → 10 → 9 → 8 → 7 → 6 → 5 → 4 → 3 → 2 → A
Card Values
| Card | Value | |------|--------| | A | 11 | | K, Q, J, 10 | 10 | | 9 → 2 | Face value |
Setup
- Give each player 3 lives using coins, chips, or anything small.
- Deal 3 cards face-down to every player.
- Place the deck in the center as the draw pile.
- Flip the top card face-up to begin the discard pile.
- The player to the dealer’s left takes the first turn.
You’re now ready for the familiar rhythm: draw a card, discard a card, hope your suit comes together, and pray your hand isn’t the weakest when someone finally knocks.
Example Starting Hand
24 points (strong start)
9♥ 8♥ 7♥
How to Play
On your turn, choose:
1. Draw + Discard
- Draw from draw pile or discard pile
- Discard 1 card face-up
2. Knock
- Say “Knock!”
- All other players get exactly one more turn
- Then reveal hands and score
Calculating Your Hand
Score = sum of cards in your best suit only
Example: Spades = 21, Hearts = 5 → 21 points
A♠ 10♠ 5♥
Perfect Hand (31)
31 points
A♥ K♥ Q♥
Show immediately — everyone else loses a life.
When to Knock
- 27+ points → good knock
- 25–26 → situational
- < 23 → risky
- < 20 → don’t knock
Example ideal knock hand: 27 points
A♠ K♠ 6♠
Scoring a Round
After knocking or showing 31:
- Player with lowest hand value loses 1 life
- If tied for lowest → all tied players lose 1 life
Example: 27 points :
A♠ K♠ 6♠
27 points :
10♦ 9♦ 8♦
18 points :
7♣ 6♣ 5♣
10 points → loses life
K♥ 5♠ 3♣
Strategy Tips
Focus a Suit
Try to gather three cards of the same suit:
27 points (excellent)
10♣ 9♣ 8♣
Avoid mixed suits: only 11 points (Ace alone) :
A♦ K♠ Q♥
When to Draw From Discard
Grab top discard if it boosts your best suit:
Discard: J♠ Your hand:
A♠ 10♠ 5♥
→ Take J♠ for 31!
When to Draw From Deck
Draw blind when:
- Discard doesn’t help your suit
- You want to hide your strategy
Life-Based Strategy
With 3 lives:
- More aggressive
- Knock earlier (25–26)
With 1 life:
- Conservative
- Knock only with strong 27+ hands
- Watch discards carefully
Reading Opponents
- If they pick from discard, avoid discarding that suit
- If they keep discarding Diamonds, they aren’t collecting Diamonds
Ending the Game
Players lose lives one by one. When someone drops to 0 lives, they’re out.
Last player with at least 1 life wins.
Variants
31 / Scat
Same classic game, just a different name depending on where you play.
Ride the Bus
The eliminated player must suffer through a series of penalty rounds — usually loud, silly, and brutal.
Wild 31
Add Jokers as wild cards that can stand for any value, making perfect hands appear more often… and heartbreaks too.
High-Low 31
Before dealing, decide whether the highest or the lowest hand wins. Completely changes the table’s energy and adds a fun twist.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if two players tie for the lowest hand?
When two players share the lowest total, they both lose a life. If three or even more players tie at the bottom, everyone with that matching low score loses a life together. It can feel a bit brutal, but it keeps every round tense and unpredictable.
Can I make 31 with cards from different suits?
No, 31 only counts when all the points come from a single suit. You look at each suit in your hand and keep only the highest scoring one. Mixed suits don’t stack together, so a hand like K♠ Q♥ A♦ only gives you 11 points from the Ace in diamonds.
What if someone gets 31 on the initial deal?
A natural 31 on the deal ends the round right away. The player should reveal it instantly and call out 31 on the spot. No turns, no decisions, no drama. Everyone else loses a life and the table moves on to a fresh deal.
Can I knock on my first turn?
Yes, you can knock immediately, but it’s rarely a smart move unless you were dealt something excellent like 27 points or more. Knocking early gives your opponents one last chance to improve, so timing matters a lot.
What if I knock and then lose the round?
If you knock and still end up with the lowest hand, you lose a life exactly like anyone else. Knocking doesn’t offer any kind of protection. It simply speeds up the round, so you need a hand that can actually hold up.
Can I take back a knock?
No, knocking is final. Once you announce it, the flow of the round changes and every player gets exactly one more turn. After that, hands are revealed. Think carefully before committing, because there’s no rewind button.
How many times can I cycle through the draw pile?
In most Texas 31 tables, the draw pile can loop endlessly until someone knocks. Some house rules add a bit of pressure with a three cycle limit, but the classic version lets the deck keep going as long as the tension builds.
What is the best starting hand in Texas 31?
The dream hand is A♠ K♠ Q♠ or any perfect combination worth 31 in a single suit. A♠ 10♠ K♠ is another beauty. Three face cards of the same suit scoring 30 points are also incredibly strong and often enough to win or justify an early knock.
