Objective
Your goal is to hit 30 points before your opponents do, or 50 if you’re settling in for a longer match. You bid on how many tricks you think you can take, then you actually have to deliver. The highest bid lets you name trump, and that single choice turns every hand into a sharp little duel of nerve, timing, and table awareness.
Material
24-card Euchre deck:
9♠ 10♠ J♠ Q♠ K♠ A♠
Four suits: 9, 10, J, Q, K, A

Card Ranking
In Trump Suit:
J♥ J♦ A♥ K♥ Q♥ 10♥ 9♥

In Non-Trump Suits:
A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠ 9♠
Standard ranking from Ace (high) to 9 (low).
Setup
For 4 players (most common):
- Deal all 24 cards evenly: 6 cards per player
- No kitty or widow in Bid Euchre
For 6 players:
- Use 32-card deck (add 7s and 8s)
- Deal 5 cards per player plus 2-card kitty
Players form partnerships sitting opposite each other.
Example Starting Hand
J♠ A♠ K♠ 10♣ 9♣ Q♦
A strong hand in Spades that usually gives you the confidence to bid 4 or even 5 in that suit.
How to Play
Bidding Phase
Starting left of the dealer, each player either places a bid or passes. Every new bid must top the one before it, which creates a nice rising tension at the table.

Scoring
Making Your Bid
| Bid Made | Points Earned | Partner Bonus | |----------|---------------|---------------| | 3 tricks | 1 point | Normal play | | 4 tricks | 2 points | Normal play | | 5 tricks | 5 points | Normal play | | 6 tricks | 10 points | Slam bonus! | | Going Alone (3) | 2 points | Partner sits out | | Going Alone (4) | 4 points | Partner sits out | | Going Alone (5) | 10 points | Partner sits out | | Going Alone (6) | 20 points | Rare but huge! |
Failing Your Bid (Being Euchred)
If you miss your bid, you pay the price. You lose double the bid value, while your opponents earn the standard value.
Example: Bid 4 tricks, win only 3:
- You: -4 points (double penalty)
- Opponents: +2 points
Opponent Scoring
The non bidding team only scores when the bidder fails. Otherwise, they simply defend and wait for their chance to strike.
Strategy Tips
Strong Bidding Hands
Bid 5 hand:
J♥ J♦ A♥ K♥ 10♥ A♠
Five strong trump cards including both Bowers plus a side Ace usually give you the freedom to aim confidently for a bid of 5 in Hearts.
Going Alone hand:
J♣ J♠ A♣ K♣ Q♣ 10♣
When you hold every top trump, going alone becomes a tempting and often rewarding choice.
Conservative Bidding
Bid 3 hand:
A♠ K♠ Q♠ 10♥ 9♥ J♦
A solid set in Spades but not much elsewhere, which makes a cautious bid of 3 in Spades the safest call.
When to Pass
Weak hand:
9♠ 10♠ 9♣ 10♣ 9♦ Q♥
When your hand lacks power cards like Jacks, Aces, or Kings, passing and defending usually keeps you out of trouble.
Playing Strategy
- Lead trump if your bid relies on trump strength
- Save your Bowers for key moments
- Watch partner's plays to read their hand
- Count trump to know what remains in play
Ending the Game
The first team to reach 30 points wins, or 50 points if you want a longer match. If both teams cross 30 in the same hand, the higher score takes it instantly.
Variants
Call Ace Euchre
The highest bidder calls an Ace, and the player holding it secretly becomes their partner for the round.
Railroad Euchre
A Joker enters as the ultimate trump card, and the scoring shifts to reward overtricks and punish undertricks.

Winning: First to +10 points (or -10 eliminates you)
Frequently asked questions
How is Bid Euchre different from regular Euchre?
Bid Euchre changes the feel of the game right from the start. Instead of jumping directement into tricks, every player announces how many tricks they believe they can win, and this little auction sets the tone. The highest bidder earns the right to name trump, which adds a pleasant layer of mind games and ambition. The game usually runs with a larger deck as well, often 36 or 48 cards instead of the classic 24, which gives the hands more variety and keeps the bidding lively.
How many cards does each player get in Bid Euchre?
The number of cards you receive depends on how many players sit at the table and which deck the variant uses. In the common four player version with a 36 card deck, everyone gets 9 cards. Some versions introduce larger decks, and the deal simply adjusts so that each player starts with a hand that fits the chosen format.
What happens if you don't make your bid in Bid Euchre?
When you place a bid, you commit to winning that number of tricks. If you fall short, you’re considered set, and instead of scoring points, you lose the value of your bid. This setback can sting, which is exactly why bidding boldly can feel exciting but also a bit risky.
Can you bid to take all tricks in Bid Euchre?
Yes, you can. Going for all the tricks is often the boldest bid you can announce, and many players call it a march or a slam. When you succeed, you usually earn a generous bonus, which makes the attempt both tempting and a little nerve-racking.
Is Bid Euchre played in teams?
Bid Euchre shifts depending on the variant. You can play it with everyone for themselves, but many tables prefer partnerships, especially with four players. Playing in teams adds a nice cooperative layer where you read your partner’s signals and try to steer the hand together.
