Objective

Win tricks containing valuable cards and score extra points by declaring “cantos” (King–Queen pairs). Tute is a tactical trick-taking game where you must manage trump, track high-value cards, time your declarations, and coordinate with a partner (in 4-player mode). Across each hand, your goal is to collect the majority of the 120 available points and strategically use cantos to push your score above the target total (101 or 201). Efficient point capture, trump control, and good memory are key to winning.

Material

  • 40-card Spanish deck: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 (Sota/Jack), 11 (Caballo/Horse), 12 (Rey/King)
  • Four suits: Oros (coins), Copas (cups), Espadas (swords), Bastos (clubs)

2–4 players (2 solo or 4 in fixed partnerships)

Setup

2 players: Deal 10 cards each, rest face-down. Flip top card of remaining stack — its suit is trump.

Cantos (Declarations):

  • When leading with a King or Queen, declare the pair if you hold both
  • Regular canto (non-trump suit): 20 points
  • Trump canto: 40 points

Frequently asked questions

What is Tute?

Tute is a classic trick-taking game that has been part of Spanish and Latin American card culture for generations. It uses the traditional 40-card Spanish deck and plays a lot like Italian Briscola. You score points by capturing valuable cards and by making key declarations during the hand.

What is the card ranking in Tute?

Each card has a specific value. Aces are worth 11, Threes give you 10, Kings score 4, Knights score 3, and Jacks give 2. All lower cards are worth nothing, but they still matter for winning tricks. Trump cards sit above the rest and can win even against higher cards of other suits.

What is singing in Tute?

If you hold the King and the Knight of the same suit, you can declare it out loud to score extra points. It’s worth 20 points in a normal suit and 40 if it’s the trump suit. This little moment always brings a spark to the table and often shifts the rhythm of the round.

What is "Tute"?

Tute is a rare and exciting declaration. If you hold all four Kings or all four Knights, you can announce it and win the game instantly. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s unforgettable, especially in partnership versions where timing and teamwork matter.
