Ride the Bus Rules

Objective

Do everything you can to avoid finishing dead last. The moment you become the only player still holding cards, you’re pushed straight onto the infamous bus—an unforgiving gauntlet of guesses where every mistake digs the hole a little deeper. The whole game becomes a mix of nerves, quick reads, and hoping someone else slips before you do.

Material

Standard 52-card deck:

A♠ 2♠ 3♠ 4♠ 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ 8♠ 9♠ 10♠ J♠ Q♠ K♠

Setup

Players: 3-8 (4-6 is the sweet spot)

Deal: Everyone gets 4 face-down cards in a row.

Player layout:

The remaining deck forms the stock pile, and you flip the top card to start the discard pile. From there, the tension builds fast, and the race to stay off the bus begins.

How to Play - Four Questions

Each player faces the infamous four-question gauntlet, flipping one card at a time.

Question 1: Red or Black?

You guess the color of your first card. Flip it over:

• Correct: Nice start, move on
• Wrong: Take the penalty, but you still flip card #2

Question 2: Higher or Lower?

Now guess whether your second card is higher or lower than your first. Flip it:

• Correct: Keep going
• Wrong: Drink, and flip anyway

Ties: Count as wrong (unless your house rules are generous… most aren’t).

Question 3: Inside or Outside?

Time to guess if your third card lands inside or outside the first two.

Example: Your first two are 5 and J. Inside = 6,7,8,9,10 Outside = A,2,3,4,Q,K

Flip:

• Correct: Keep the streak
• Wrong: Another penalty

Question 4: Suit?

The final boss: guess the suit (♠ ♥ ♦ ♣). Flip:

• Correct: You’re safe for the round
• Wrong: Yep… another drink

The Pyramid

After everyone finishes the four-card trial, build a face-down pyramid like this:

Rows go bottom to top: 1 drink, 2 drinks, 3 drinks, 4 drinks.

Flipping Pyramid Cards

Dealer flips one card at a time, starting at the bottom.

If YOU have a matching rank:

• Show it
• Assign that row’s number of drinks
• (You can assign all of them to one person… or spread the love)

Pro move: Save strong matches for higher rows — more chaos.

Riding the Bus

Whoever racks up the most penalties now climbs aboard the bus — alone.

Bus Format

You must get a streak of correct guesses (usually 4–5 in a row) using red/black flips.

For each card:

1. Guess red or black
2. Flip
3. Correct: Continue
4. Wrong: Drink… and start the streak at zero again

Escape only when you complete the required streak.

Evil variant: Every failed attempt makes the streak longer. Yes, it’s as nasty as it sounds.

Drinking Penalties

You drink for:

• Wrong guesses in the four questions
• Matches people assign during the pyramid
• Failing streaks during bus rides

Family version: Use points instead of drinks.

Strategy

Question 1: Red or Black

Straight 50/50. Some players always call red — doesn’t actually help, but feels confident.

Question 2: Higher or Lower

Depends on your first card:

• Low card (A-6): Usually Higher
• High card (9-K): Usually Lower
• 7 or 8: Pure coin flip

Question 3: Inside or Outside

Spread matters:

• A + K? Huge inside range → Inside
• Narrow spread like 7 + 9? → Outside
• Adjacent cards? → Definitely Outside

Question 4: Suit

25% gamble. If you’re card-counting suits… good luck, tiny edge but barely matters.

Pyramid Strategy

• Saving cards for upper rows = more drink damage
• But wait too long and someone else might play your match first
• Know your group: chaos players strike early

Variants

Point-Based Ride the Bus

No drinking — penalties become points. Lowest score wins, loser rides the bus.

Team Ride the Bus

Partners share wins, pains… and the bus.

Speed Ride the Bus

You get 5 seconds per guess. Panic included.

Extended Questions

Add a 5th question like “Odd or Even” for extra punishment.

Tips

Probability

• Q1: 50%
• Q2: Depends — edges help a lot
• Q3: Spread = everything
• Q4: 25% no matter what

Pyramid Play

Conservative: Use all matches immediately to guarantee impact Aggressive: Hold your aces for the 4-drink top row

Riding the Bus

Stay calm. People blow streaks because they tilt or rush. Slow down, breathe, guess, survive.

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Misplaying Q3

• Guessing inside with a tiny spread
• Guessing outside when the spread is wide

Mistake 2: Burning pyramid matches too early

• Don’t drop a K on the 1-drink row
• Save it for later destruction

Mistake 3: Ignoring suit distribution

• If tons of Spades already flipped, fewer remain
• Tiny edge, but sometimes it matters

Mistake 4: Losing composure on the bus

• Rushing guesses
• Tilt leads to disaster
