Frequently asked questions
What is Mille Bornes?
Mille Bornes is a classic French racing card game where players try to reach one thousand kilometers by playing distance cards. Hazards slow you down, remedies get you moving again, and safety cards protect you completely. The tension comes from balancing progress, timing attacks, and defending yourself at the right moment.
What types of cards are in Mille Bornes?
The deck includes distance cards from twenty five to two hundred kilometers, hazards like Accident or Out of Gas, remedies that fix those hazards, and special safety cards that provide permanent protection. Each category influences the flow of the race, so understanding when to attack or defend is essential for consistent success.
What are Safety cards?
Safety cards give permanent immunity to specific hazards for the entire hand. Right of Way protects against Stop and Speed Limit, Extra Tank protects against Out of Gas, Puncture Proof protects against Flat Tire, and Driving Ace protects against Accident. Playing them at the ideal moment can secure valuable bonus points and shift momentum.
What is a Coup Fourré?
A Coup Fourré happens when you instantly counter an opponent’s hazard with the matching safety card. You stop the attack, gain immunity for the rest of the hand, and earn a three hundred point bonus. It is one of the most dramatic and rewarding moments in the game and can reverse the entire standings.
How do you win Mille Bornes?
To win a round, a player or team must reach exactly one thousand kilometers using distance cards. In some shorter versions, the target is seven hundred kilometers. Overall victory comes from accumulating five thousand points across several rounds, rewarding both consistent scoring and smart use of safeties and bonuses.
Can you play Mille Bornes with partners?
Yes. With four or six players, the game can be played in partnerships. Teammates share a single racing tableau and combine their distance, hazards, remedies, and safeties. Coordinating attacks and defenses as a team creates a more tactical and lively experience while preserving the core mechanics of the game.
